Return of Cyclecide

Cyclecide Heavy Pedal Bike Rodeo, a nationally known punk rock, bike-centric circus show, is making its home in Bayview once again.

Situated next to Flora Grubb on Jerrold Street, a newly-leased warehouse is home to bike and ride builder-welders, the band Los Banjos, and clowns who perform tricks and skits during shows. Together they are known as Cyclecide, one of Bayview’s most unique neighbors.

Cyclecide had resided at the Green Tortoise house on Jerrold until moving to ACE Junk Yard. ACE closed in 2008, leaving Cyclecide homeless ... no small problem for a troupe of performers with a complete carnival of pedal-powered rides, art bikes and an old school bus.

Cyclecide, with its pedal-powered midway and punk-rock clowns, is a yearly fixture at Art 94124’s annual art’s festival on Fairfax and 3rd, and has made appearances at SF Sunday Streets. The troupe has performed at rock festivals such as Coachella and Bumbershoot; and, rumor has it, their midway will be a feature of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park this fall.

Bayview arts festival ushers in Summer

Doggy Diner heads watched over the festivities

ART 94124 hosted its third block festival on Saturday, June 5th, under a warm Bayview sky. Stage performances, Cyclecide rides, good food, family arts, and neighborliness ruled the day. In the ART 94124 Gallery was an anniversary benefit group exhibit. Visit ART 94124's web site for more.

See great pictures of the 2008 festival and 2009 festival. And even more here!

Congratulations to all the organizers!

Arts fair grows from grassroots

A young biker motors through ART 94124's arts fair.

The second arts fair, created by Bayview residents and others with deep roots in the neighborhood, was held on Saturday, June 6th. It marked both the accomplishments of Gallery 94124 and Javalencia Cafe, and the growth of resident involvement on the north end of 3rd Street in Bayview.

A steady stream of arts-interested residents and their friends enjoyed the Family Arts Table, whacky Cyclecide carnival contraptions, art from the gallery and Public Glass, food and beverages, live music, and more. Organizers were pleased with the turnout, given the growth since last year's inaugural event.

ART 94124, the organizing group for the gallery and the fair, is a Bayview Footprints Network member group. The fair strengthened the Network through broad participation that included other Network members: Shipyard Trust for the Arts and Think Round Inc. (Family Arts Table), Public Glass, Bayview Business Resource Center, and individuals associated with groups such as the Latona and Quesada Gardens.

Primary organizer, Sarah Stangle, reported the accomplishments of ART 94124, including a string of gallery shows and events, opportunities for local artists to share their work, and ongoing contributions to the level of volunteerism and participation in a changing neighborhood.
