SECF Mural Dedication - Thursday at 1pm

The Quesada Gardens mural isn't the newest in the neighborhood anymore. That's just fine with Quesadians, since it's all part of the same community-building effort.

A cast of stellar Southeast Sector community members and San Francisco big-wigs gathered for the dedication of a new mural at the Southeast Community Facility at 1pm this Thursday. The mural is the work of Santie Huckaby, who also worked on the Quesada mural, and project leader Heidi Hardin who is also a Bayview Footprints partner, artist and community-builder. (Heidi also led the children's tile art project for Quesada Gardens.)

The new mural depicts community leaders Espanola Jackson, Harold Brooks, Eloise Westbrook, Ethyl Garlington, Shirley Jones and Alex Pitcher -- who worked with Roger Boaz, SF's Chief Administrative Officer, and architect Jim Jefferson to build the facility for education, business development, jobs and meeting space in the community.

Mayor Art Agnos appointed the first Commissioners of the SECF, and to date twenty-five individuals have served in this capacity including: Malik Looper, Heidi Hardin, Millard Larkin, John Knox, Kim Nguyen, Rollie Lepana, Atiliai Tofaeono, Enola Maxwell, Sululagi Palega, Shirley Jones, Espanola Jackson, Matthew Ettinger, Linda Richardson, Scott Madison, Esther Blanchard, Ethyl Garlington and - in yet another Quesada connection - Thomas Galante (QGI Co-Founder and longtime resident on the 1700 block). Current Commissioners include: Bobbrie Brown, President, Juan Fuentes, Dr. Churchwell, Louise C. Jones, Willie B. Kennedy, Harrison Parker, Kenneth Sampson and Ronald Person.

The SECF is one of the neighborhood's most important community spaces. The new mural just to the right of the entrance acknowledges the leadership that made the facility possible, the role residents can play in strengthening the community, and the rich history of leadership and involvement that contemporary efforts are a part of.
