Earth Day in Bayview

There was a time when seeing a farm animal in the heart of Bayview wasn't unusual. Not so much these though, as a sheep with a winning personality found out Saturday during a celebration of Earth Day in the heart of Bayview.

Aside from food served up by Radio Africa's Eskender and friends, Shawn the Sheep was the most popular attraction. Shawn is a four-legged friend of Michael Hamman who brought him to the celebration along with a coral of hay bales and a bag of feed.

Festival performances were literally kicked-off by Rachel from the Bayview YMCA who led participants in kick-boxing moves. 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic's 3sp youth rapped their truth at the microphone. Community organizations, such as Renaissance Parents of Success and the Bayview Child Health Center, passed out informational cards and flyers that didn't fly off on their own in the Bayview breeze.

SF Environment and the Red Cross Bay Area also set up shop to share information about Zero Waste and disaster preparedness.

Also celebrating were Quesada Gardens neighbors who turned out to volunteer in the gardens, and Urban Farm Girls who held their own Earth Day event at their studio on Wallace Avenue.
