Bayview veterans served

More people enter military service from neighborhoods like Bayview Hunters Point than from more affluent neighborhoods. That means complex issues facing returning veterans and their families are more prevalent here, too.

That fact is not lost on neighborhood service providers who want to help.

Project Families In Need gave out bicycles to military veterans at an event called Christmas Bikes 4 Veterans during the 2012 season.  The group found a building where it fixed, cleaned and stored donated bikes.

"Our plan is to keep supplying veterans with bikes as long as we keep getting them," Project FIN Director Gwen Strain told Footprints.

Gwen, who is also a leader with the Bayview Hunters Point Lion's, maintains Rose Home, a clean and sober facility that accommodates 16 residents including veterans. Rose Home is located at 1221 Newhall Street at McKinnon.
