Young Peter Apostal from the 1400 block of Quesada preferred to watch the crowd rather than the cartoons and short films about the neighborhood that kicked off the 2nd film night in the Quesada Gardens Outdoor Film Festival series. Whatever your vantage point, it was quite a night!
If you missed one of these unique film nights which brings community to the Bayview's streets at night for free food, film and fun, you have another chance. Our four amazing youth staffers have helped us with all aspects of producing this festival, and now they are organizing their own film night while the adults sit back and applaud.
Ryan Watts, Isaiah Ross, Apollos Ross, and Giovanni Gray - all from the 1700 block of Quesada Avenue - stepped forward to support the festival, and now they've chosen their own film night program: Stomp the Yard preceded by cartoons.
Stomp the Yard, directed by Sylvain White, follows a troubled 19-year-old street dancer from Los Angeles, after the death of his younger brother, as he tries to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in the historically black Truth University in Atlanta, Georgia. But his efforts to get an education and woo the girl he likes are sidelined when he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly coveted national step show competition.
With support from the San Francisco Foundation, our second film night at the mural site near the community garden last Saturday was a success. One could see new faces and plenty of young people who turned out for the event. We hope to see even more BVHP residents and their friends on Saturday the 14th. Don't forget: your chair is your ticket.
If we're lucky, our youth staffers just might show us their own street-style dance moves!
