The first in a series of film nights at the Quesada Gardens Initiative garden and mural sites – smack dab in the heart of the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood just off Third – was well-attended and really charming.
Here’s the news: there was none. No gunshots splitting the night. No police intervention. Not even a harmless drunk wandering into the event (try that in most any SF neighborhood.) The point is that about 50 residents and friends from all backgrounds just hung out on the street together at night eating hotdogs and popcorn, laughing, and trying to keep the children from running under foot.
The backdrop was the stunning community garden and the mural with its vibrant colors barely dry on the wall behind the screen.
Bayview secrets are leaking out! One of them is this amazing garden/art oasis in the Bayview’s heart. Another is that our neighborhood is stronger, safer, more beautiful than most San Franciscan’s know.
Huge thanks go to our funder, the San Francisco Foundation, and to our youth staffers Giovanni, Apollos, Ryan, and Isaah. Yvonne Hines donated amazing cookies from her Third Street business Pralines by Yvonne. Shane (pictured), documentary filmmaker and creative force behind the film "Girls Rock," led the programming for the fest. Mike, Mike, David, James, and so many other QGI members also pitched in in big ways.
Please come next Saturday the 30th at 8pm for the next evening in the film series.
